Anna Laakkonen

Anna Laakkonen is a Research Assistant working on the ERC CivilWars project. She is a PhD researcher in Finnish History at the University of Eastern Finland. Her dissertation explores the history of socialist Finns who fled to Soviet Russia after losing the Finnish Civil War in 1918. They published newspapers in Soviet Russia in which they honoured the memory of the Finnish Civil War and prepared for a new revolution in Finland. The “Red” Finns wanted to create their own version of the history of the Finnish Civil War in the Soviet Union, because the “White” Finns dominated the commemoration of the civil war in Finland. This aim was left unfinished when almost all Finnish journalists living in the Soviet Union were killed in Stalin’s purges in 1937–1938.

Anna Laakkonen’s research interests include the history of the press, propaganda, memory politics, and terror.
