Dr. Jack Kavanagh

Dr. Jack Kavanagh is a Research Assistant at the Centre for War Studies working with Prof. Robert Gerwarth the ERC CivilWars project. He holds a B.A. in History from NUI Galway, an M.Phil in Public History and Cultural Heritage from Trinity College Dublin and recently completed his PhD in Maynooth University. Prior to joining UCD, Dr Kavanagh completed a two-year tenure as Historian-in-Residence for Leitrim County Council, coordinating the commemorative programme in county Leitrim for the final years of the Decade of Centenaries programme.

His doctoral research focused upon the development of the Irish National Army and the subsequent role played by the ‘winners’ of the Irish civil war in establishing a new Irish Free State. His broader research interests include historical geography, civil-military relations, ex-servicemen and the spatial relationships of state and quasi-state institutions in the nineteenth and twentieth century in Ireland. His first monograph, The Irish Free State and the National Army, 1922–24 will be published with Routledge Press.
